FISH HAVE BEEN CAUGHT FROM 15 TO 19 METRES OFF CHELSEA AND CARRUM
NOT MUCH OFF FRANKSTON YET BUT IT WONT BE LONG

Port Phillip in Autumn (update 10th March 2010)

An excellent run of Autumn snapper is on from carrum to Dromana ATM with fish from 2.5 to 6 kg
whilst numbers arent as high as the spring peak bag limit catches have been common
fish have been taking squid (fresh and gars as well as soft plastics with the 16 and 19 metre line being the preffered depths
one of the best runs of garfish is also occuring and theses excellent little tablefish and baitfish have been in good numbers both from the piers and out wider
squid are slowijng and require a bit of work but the black rock and rye areas are holding good numbers
on the western side of the bay from altona south there have been salmon schools and gars as well as the odd thumping snapper to 7.1kgs
water temps are still high (21.5 mid bay as i write this) so the snapper will remain for som,e weeks to come
King george whitien are being caught over most of the weed/ shale broken bottom areas on both sides of the bay and north and south with pipis and squid being the stand out baits

Dean Brooke with a typical PPB Autumn snapper

Snapper still thick on the ground (17th December 2009)

New schools of fresh new fish still seem to be entering our bays
there has been an excellent run of bigger fish in the northern end of the bay and good numbers of school fish are still being caught in and around the ricketts point area

Frankston Chelsea and Carrum are still producing quality fish with the best depths being 12 to 16 metres in the mornings and 16 to 20 metres of an evening Regular contributer Heath caught a personal best snapper of 5.3 kgs last Sunday off altona on a Pilchard

SNAPPER STARTING TO GET THICKER

As i writethis we have had a couple of warmer days and the Temeperature is now coming up in the bay nicely
the fishing has been spasmodic with fish turning on in some areas and refusing to bite in other areas
A great example of this was sunday morning (25th Oct) with the black rock and Stkilda area firing and out wide in 21 metres off Seaford producing very little when it had gone really well the day before
The best and most consistant catches heve come from the wide areas from Mornington to Chelsea in 20 to 21 metres and around black Rock and Stkilda in 10 to 16 metres
Areas such as Frankston and Seaford whilst holding good numbers of fish just haven fired up as yet although it wont be long

Andy Smith hooked up to a nice 5 kg model

Keen Snapper angler Sammy with a lovely early morning Red

the squid are still going well on both sides of the bay and anglers are now torn between frying them up and sending them down as bait

So to Wrap up
best baits are squid Pillies and Silver whiting ATM
best areas are Altona St kilda Black rock mornington and chelsea

SO AS THE TEMPS COME UP SO WILL THE NUMBERS OF FISH
ONLY TAKE WHAT YOU NEED AND LETS ENSURE OUR FISH FOR THE FUTURE

REMEMBER IF YOU SEE SOMEONE DOING THE WRONG THING RING 13FISH

Early Season Snapper

From Early September there has been a solid (although a little spasmodic) run of serious early season snapper with many boats getting bag limit catches of fish ranging from 3.1 to 6kg
best spots have been all the way from Mornington to black rock in depths ranging from 13 to 19 metres

ANDY from Gone Fishin in Lathams road Carrum Downs with his first for the season

the likes of Matt Cini etc have been doing well and Matt looks set for a bumper charter season running 2 boats this year

best baits have been the humble pilchard

UPDATE MID JULY 09

Squid are being caught in good numbers from Mt Martha to Frankston when the water is clean and the rain hasnt added to much fresh water Best jigs have been yamashitas in natural and dark colours seasoned with a bit of stimulate

garfish are also about in the same areas but have been finicky with little slices of pilchard proving the best bait and burley being important

Up the top end of the bay pinky snapper are about from black rock through to St Kilda and from werribee to Altona  humble pilchard and squid strips seem to be the way to go

salmon have been taken from Portsea peir on occasion and from the blairgowrie area and squid in both these areas also

Corio bays winter snapper fishery has been slow with the odd resident fish being caught
